Dr. Nurelegne Tefera’s Welcoming Speech on the Fourth Annual Research Conference
MAY 31-June 1 /2018
- Your Excellency, Dr-Ing Getahun Mekuria, Minister, Ministry of Science and Technology
- Dear Distinguished Guests,
- Dear Conference Participants,
- Dear Our University Staff Members,
- Ladies and Gentlemen,
On behalf of AASTU and myself, I would like to welcome all of you to the Fourth Annual Research Conference of our University.
Before I reflect on today’s annual conference theme,“Research and Innovation for Sustainable Economy”, please allow me to say a few words about our university.
Our University, Addis Ababa Science and Technology University was established in 2011 to provide research based undergraduate and graduate programs. In pursuit of this commitment, we comply with all requirements and continually improve on its effectiveness by doing research and innovation.
AASTU in its inception was under the Ministry of Education. However, due to our government’s special attention to the university, AASTU’s accountability has shifted to the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) in 2014 after 3 years of its genesis.
Currently, the university, under its five colleges which focus on applied sciences, technology, engineering and ICT, has enrolled nearly 7000 undergraduate and close to 1000 masters and PhD students.
AASTU, as a unique university in our country, solely focuses on science and technology driven research areas. Under the motto, “University for Industry,” we have been making every endeavor to make this university as a research university in science and technology related fields.
In doing so, we often admit best students from all over the country based on entrance examination. The idea behind this enrollment is to produce best graduates by admitting best students. In the same way, we recruit teachers locally and internationally on competitive academic and research merit base.
In order to achieve the above mission and vision of the university to be a research university, we have launched 35 research based masters and 33 PhD programs. To support the research endeavor of our staff and students, we have established the following eight centers of excellence:
- Artificial Intelligence and Robotics
- Biotechnology and Bioprocessing
- Constriction Quality and Technology
- High Performance Computing and Big Data Analytics
- Nuclear Reactor Technology
- Nano Technology
- Mineral Exploration, Extraction and Processing
- Sustainable energy
These Centers of Excellence will help us to conduct problem solving research in engineering, science, technology and other areas. And, our PhD programs are also twined with these centers of excellence. All academic staff and postgraduate researchers will conduct their research in these Centers of excellence.
Since last year, we have been establishing core laboratories which will give service not only for AASTU but also for other stakeholders and the academia.
Dear Your Excellency, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Our country is increasingly being recognized as a major investment destination because of its fast-paced economic progress, its unique location, for booming business opportunities it provides, cheap provision of labor and energy, and for its attractive investment incentives. To this end, research and innovation play a great role for the transformation of our country’s economy.
Research and innovations are core strategies to sustain the manufacturing sector and ultimately to sprout our country’s economy. Both are very essential for economic development and social progress. They create sustainable development by building inclusive societies.
In the new knowledge based global economy, research and innovation have become critical for all sectors. It is proved that, universities, industries, companies and government departments which do not have research and innovation centers will finally fall. Obviously, research and innovation are a major component of our country’s goal to create a dynamic, innovative economy.
Most successful countries in their economy realized that they can no longer rely only on their own resources, human or infrastructure, but they depend on research and innovation. Therefore, research and innovation determine a country’s economy. They can be created anywhere –without any boundary and they may be beneficial to a wide range of areas in the world. Thus, the role of research and innovation play an irreplaceable role to be more successful in a national and global economy.
Doing research will not solve our problem. Research should be based on countries’ problems and must be disseminated to reach out for the users.
Dear Your Excellency, Ladies and Gentlemen,
The motive of this annual conference, under theme of “Research and Innovation for Sustainable Economy”, is to bring together the academia, researchers and policymakers in a common national platform to exchange the knowledge and experience on research and innovations.
As many of you are aware of it, Research and Innovation are both a driver for economic development and a cornerstone in the making of societies that are more sustainable and more respectful to our planet.
Particularly, innovation, which applies fresh thinking and new techniques, is the key to bring economic growth. It is central to translating scientific knowledge and technological know-how into useful products, services and employment. High productivity in a country implicates a successful economy which in turn shows increased prosperity.
All in all, Research and Innovation bring important window of opportunity to create a sustainable economy and to create a sustainable society. Thus, any University should promote research and innovation that support the society to fully have sustainable economy.
In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the participants and conference organizing committee for their diligent work. Especially, I would like to thank your Excellency and those of you coming from other universities and organizations, for joining us and sharing your irreplaceable experiences and ideas. This conference is certainly a wonderful addition to our knowledge, skills and attitude towards the theme of the conference.
Once again, I happily welcome you all for this fourth annual research conference and I look forward to hearing of practical recommendations that can help us to reach the goal of increased economic growth using research and innovation.
I hope that all of you will enjoy the conference, and I wish all of you to have a very pleasant stay in Addis Ababa.
Dr. Nurelegne Tefera
