Dr Nurelegne Tefera, President of AASTU

Addis Ababa Science and Technology University is established with clear mandates of teaching, research and community services.  It is entrusted with a special mission – a mission to bring a real impact in science and technology in the country in the shortest time possible. More specifically, the strategic purposes that reinforce the establishment of AASTU are:

  • To support the transformation of the Ethiopian economy from agriculture base to Science & Technology dependent industrial economy,
  • To serve as the national hub of Science & Technology and origin of innovation & invention.
  • To serve as a Model University in its endeavors, which sets national standard that meets international level.

In this regard, (AASTU) has established 8 centers of excellence and turn have huge impacts on research and innovation outputs. It has launched 35 PhD and 33 Masters Programs in its 13 departments and admitted 76 PhD & 380 Masters students this year.

In order to accomplish such special mission, AASTU highly desires that its academic staff members meet the highest standard for quality teaching and research.

We are working vigorously to equip AASTU with necessary and sufficient manpower for quality research in key scientific and technological areas. This, of course, requires professional advice and support from well-established science and technology universities which are rich in knowledge and experience in developing a science and technology university.

That is why, we have entered into collaborative partnership with international universities and organizations from Europe, USA, Asia and Africa, specifically with China.

In this way, the China Chamber of Commerce in Ethiopia (CCCE) education foundation can be taken as one of the strategic partners of our university.

Your excellences, invited guests, ladies and gentlemen,

As it is stated in the Memorandum of Understanding signed between CCCE and AASTU, CCCE has expressed its commitment to launch Education Foundation to support the higher level education in Ethiopia with its own resources in the form of scholarship, financial incentives and other schemes. The foundation has sponsored 500,000 birr for the award in 2016 for 129 scholarship winners.

Today, we will notify the 2017 winners of CCCE funded scholarship for the second time, which will support a total of 134 undergraduate science and engineering students from year 1 to year 3. The winners have demonstrated strong academic performance in the 2016/17 academic year. They have been also showing good ethics during their stay in AASTU.

Dear invited guests, ladies and gentlemen

I would like to use this opportunity to express my gratitude to the Chinese government and the management of CCCE for their exemplary initiative to support and incentivize students of Addis Ababa Science and Technology University.

Finally, I am hopeful that the Chinese government and CCCE will continue their support in the capacity building process of our university through expanding and scaling up such scholarship programs to the highest level.
