International Symposium on Geothermal Energy in Ethiopia
Sustainable energy is a widely recognized and appreciated catalyst for societal and economic development. One of the core issues in Ethiopia’s national agenda is to accelerate investment in sustainable renewable energy; geared towards national prosperity and development. In line with this, Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU) recognized the immense opportunities presented by geothermal energy to address future renewable energy demand in Ethiopia, and Africa as a whole.
The AASTU Center of Excellence for Sustainable Energy (CoE-SE) and Center of Excellence for Mineral Exploration, Extraction, and Processing (CoE-MEEP), in collaboration with Tulu Moye Geothermal Operation and USAID, Power Africa organized the First International Symposium on Geothermal Energy in Ethiopia. The Symposium, which was held on October 1-2, 2019 at Intercontinental Hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, brought together Ethiopian government ministries and energy-related institutions, universities, geothermal private companies, and well-known professionals from Africa, Europe, and the USA.
The symposium provided investors, governments and, researchers’ exposure to current and future trends in exploration and development of geothermal energy. It also served as a forum for participants to share their experience in the exploration and development of geothermal energy as well as to discuss a way forward on collaborative research towards economically, ecologically and socially sustainable energy concepts for the future.
