AASTU’s Groundbreaking Project on Propolis Collection Receives a Whopping 2,823,950.00 EB External Grant
Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU) has accomplished a remarkable feat by securing a substantial external grant for its innovative research project. The project, titled “Development of Propolis Collection Perforated Screen (PCPS) for an Extra-Valued Hive Product for Smallholder Beekeepers,” has garnered significant support from the German Agency for International Cooperation—Agricultural Mechanization for Smallholders (GIZ-AMS). The endeavor has captured the attention of experts in the field, including representatives from GIZ-AMS. Following a rigorous evaluation of 300 proposals by the Proposal Evaluation Committee (PEC) team,
AASTU’s propolis collection project emerged as the winner in the esteemed External Research and Innovation Awards.
Scaling Up: AASTU collaborated closely with the Holeta Bee Research Center and local beekeepers to scale up propolis production, thereby promoting economic growth and environmental conservation.
Future Implications
The success of AASTU’s project has paved the way for future research and development in propolis utilization. It holds tremendous promise for improving human health, supporting local livelihoods, and fostering foreign exchange.
Congratulations to AASTU for this outstanding achievement! Their groundbreaking research not only showcases their commitment to innovation but also holds the potential to bring about positive change in various domains.
The award was presented by Professor Pascal Kaumbuthom, the team leader for GIZ-AMS, to Dr. Abrham Debebe, the Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer (VPRTT), during a prestigious award ceremony held at the Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa.
Propolis, a valuable resinous substance produced by bees, has long been recognized for its potential health benefits and cosmetic applications. AASTU’s research team, comprised of experts from the Bioprocessing and Biotechnology and Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Center of Excellence, the Department of Food Science and Applied Nutrition, and the Mechanical Engineering department, embarked on an ambitious mission to explore the collection and utilization of propolis in a sustainable and efficient manner. The primary objectives of the project were as follows:
Optimizing Propolis Harvesting: The team developed innovative techniques that allow for the collection of propolis without causing harm to bee colonies.
