Short Description of the College

The College of Architecture and Civil Engineering is one of the newly established Colleges in Addis Ababa Science and Technology University. It encompasses the previous School of Civil Engineering and Construction Technology & the previous School of Architecture and Urban Design. There are two more Departments which are included in the College namely Mining Engineering & Water Supply and Sanitary Engineering. Hence, the College is composed of six Departments.
Currently, the College of Architecture and Civil Engineering is running six undergraduate and five graduate programs. The undergraduate programs are Civil Engineering, Construction Technology and Management, Architecture, Urban Planning and Design, Mining Engineering and Water Supply and Sanitary Engineering. The graduate programs are ERA –Sponsored masters programs in the areas of Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Construction Technology and Management, Road and Transport Engineering.

The full time academic staff including MSc and PhD holders is 65 in the College. There are 18 BSc holders and total full time staff is 83. There 50 staff members who are currently studying within the country and abroad.

The student statistics shows that there are 3918 students are studying in the College. Out of which 2303 are regular students; 711 are continuing education students and the remaining 904 are Masters Students as shown in the graph below.

Short and long term plan of the college
In our short term plan, the College will launch PhD programs in the coming semester (2016/2017 Second Semester). The PhD programs planned to be launched will be Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transport Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Water Supply and Sanitary Engineering, Construction Materials Engineering and Construction Management. Masters programs to be launched in the coming September 2017 will be Water Supply and Sanitary Engineering. Three specializations in the field of Architecture are also being developed and will be launched in September 2017. The long term plan of the College is to be one of the high caliber research and innovative center competent in Africa and recognized in the globe.
Available facilities
The College has established 7 specialized laboratories in the areas of Highway Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Materials, Surveying Equipment, Computer Laboratories, Architectural Design Studios, Hydraulics, Water Quality and Treatment.

Research and Community Service

The College staff has developed 20 research proposals in the current semester (2016/17). Out of these five are ongoing, eight submitted for external grant and seven of them are submitted for internal grant. The College staff are conducting community service specially for the University itself and the surrounding community through consulting on road projects, consulting in the design of buildings, construction materials and landscape design. There is a well established collaboration with Kioto University in Du-Nou Project on Black Cotton Soil Road Project in collaboration with the Ethiopian Roads Authority. Recently, a collaborative WATSAN Masters program is established with Bahir Dar University and Arba Minch University and BOKU University of Austria.

Department of Civil Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering has the biggest number of students in the College. There are more 2000 students in the graduate and undergraduate programs. It has five graduate programs and one undergraduate program. The graduate programs are Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Construction Technology and Management, Road and Transport Engineering. In addition to these postgraduate programs, 7 PhD programs are planned to be launched in January 2016. The planned PhD programs will be under the Department of Civil Engineering.

The Department of Construction Technology and Management is designed to deal with construction project management and studying construction materials. The construction field is currently booming and the department has the vision to satisfy the current construction boom in terms of efficient management and efficient design and selection of construction materials.

The Department of Mining Engineering is the first of its kind governmental Universities mapping and exploring minerals. Ethiopia is endowed with numerous and abundant minerals; hence the department focuses on delivering courses in mining techniques, designing mining equipment and aiming at boosting and strengthening the manpower need in the mining industry.

Department of Water Supply and Sanitary Engineering

The Department of Water Supply and Sanitary Engineering is aimed at producing professionals who are capable of designing, implementing and managing water supply systems and sanitary systems. Ethiopia has low coverage of rural and urban water supply. The sanitary status is also extremely low. These problems can be solved by professionals who are capable of identifying water resources for the purpose of domestic water supply and who will seek solutions for the sanitary problem of the country.
